Are Field Sobriety Tests Standardized?
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) worked with statisticians to determine whether the sobriety tests were accurately measured what they were designed to. Three tests have been standardized:
- Horizontal gaze nystagmus (the eye test)
- Walk and turn
- One leg stand
These tests are designed to measure balance and the physical ability necessary to properly control a vehicle. Unfortunately, depending on circumstances such as medical impairment, visual difficulties or the environment in which the tests are being performed, it is not uncommon for the results of a field sobriety test to be flawed.
